SFU rejoins U SPORTS in the Canada West Conference

For years, Simon Fraser University stood as the lone Canadian school competing in the NCAA — a unique experiment that separated the program from the rest of the Canadian university sports landscape. Now, that chapter appears to be coming to a close. With SFU officially accepted as a probationary member into the Canada West conference, the move represents more than just a league change; it signals a major moment for the future of Canadian university athletics.

For SFU, this brings some much-needed stability after years of uncertainty surrounding its NCAA future. Returning to Canada West means more regional competition, reduced travel, and the return of familiar rivalries with schools like UBC, Trinity Western, and Victoria.

It will also be interesting to see how SFU’s roster develops moving forward. For many athletes, part of the appeal of the program was the opportunity to compete in the NCAA while staying in Canada. Former Western Mustangs transfer Mikyle Malabuyoc previously mentioned that the NCAA opportunity played a role in his decision to join SFU. With the program now transitioning back into U SPORTS, questions remain about how recruiting could change and whether the school will continue to attract the same level and style of talent moving forward.

Interestingly, SFU’s women’s volleyball program was not included in the initial approval process, showing there are still logistical hurdles to work through. There will also likely be discussions surrounding funding, travel, and what SFU athletics could look like long term as the school moves away from the NCAA model.

Beyond the competition side, this move feels symbolic for U SPORTS as a whole. SFU became the first Canadian school to fully join the NCAA in 2011, so seeing the program move back into the Canadian system feels like a full-circle moment. It also says a lot about where U SPORTS and Canada West are headed moving forward, with a growing focus on regional rivalries and building stronger connections between schools, athletes, and fans.

Overall, this move not only benefits Simon Fraser University, but also strengthens Canadian university basketball while reigniting regional rivalries across Canada West. At a time when U SPORTS continues to gain momentum and visibility, SFU’s return feels like a significant step forward for Canadian university athletics as a whole.
