USports Most Likely to Breakout Series: Ottawa’s Owen Kenney.

If you followed U SPORTS hoops last season, you already know Owen’s name. The Ottawa guard played a key role in his team’s championship run, finishing the year as an OUA Champion, a First Team All-Rookie selection, and ranked 2nd on the 2024 True Evolution Hoops Freshman to Watch list. After proving himself as one of the top newcomers in the country, Owen is now ready to leap into one of the nation’s best hoopers. Owen is also a friend of ours and is always a pleasure to talk to.

From Role Player to Go-To Guy

Last year, Owen’s job was simple: defend, hit threes, and bring energy off the bench. This season, the expectations are different.

” Last season I came off the bench, played defense, and hit threes — more of a role player. This year, my coach wants me to have a much bigger role: handling the ball more, scoring at all three levels, and stepping up defensively. He wants me to be one of the guys”

That expanded role, paired with a summer of development (playing with Team Canada, and in the CEBL) is a big reason why Owen is set for a breakout year.

Expanding the Game

Owen emphasized how much work he put in over the off-season. The 6’8 forward, talked about this season was all about becoming a more complete player.

“I worked a lot on my handle this summer, creating off the dribble, coming off screens and making plays for teammates. I want to be able to grab a rebound, push the ball up the court, and run the offense.”

Furthermore, what makes Owen such a great young player isn’t just his mentality on the court, but how he strives to be a great leader in the locker room.

“I’ve already started being more vocal in practice, helping guys learn plays and keeping everyone organized. We don’t have a set point guard yet, so I’m trying to step up and guide the younger players.”

Pro Mindset

Playing with the Ottawa BlackJacks in the CEBL gave Owen an early taste of professional basketball. He discussed how he’s dedicated to replicating the work ethic that he witnessed this summer.

“It was amazing. I saw how pros live every day — preparation, recovery, how they carry themselves on and off the court. The pace and IQ at that level are different. Guys just know where to be and what to do instantly.”

He also got to suit up for Canada in the Sun Life Canada Hoops 3×3 Tournament, an experience that gave him even more confidence.

“Getting to play with Canada was great. I was probably the youngest guy, but it pushed me to get better. Playing 3-on-3 against older players was different and fun, and it helped my 5-on-5 game too.”

With the success that Owen has displayed so far, there is no doubt in our minds that he will have a breakout season this year. His training habits, IQ, and focus on winning all point to a career filled with multiple accomplishments. We look forward to covering him this season and in the years to come.
