If you want to talk about rookies who made an impact right away, Yanis Malanda should be near the top of the list. The 6 ‘5 guard from Paris, France wasted no time making his presence felt in his first season with the Bishop’s Gaiters. Averaging 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, Malanda earned RSEQ Second Team All-Star honours along with the Brad Jones Award, as Bishop’s top newcomer.
It should come as no surprise that Malanda burst onto the U SPORTS scene. During his time with Vanier College, the French guard was named a First Team CEGEP All-Star in a league known for producing university-level talent. He was more than ready to make the jump—and it showed. Starting all 25 games, Malanda announced his arrival to the RSEQ in style. Now, he’s hungry for more.
True Evolution Hoops caught up with Malanda to talk about his offseason, his goals, and what’s next for the Gaiters.
Early Inspiration and Love for the Game
Yanis Malanda grew up around multiple sports, but one stuck.
“I played pretty much everything growing up. Over time I narrowed it down, and basketball was the one I couldn’t put down.”

Upcoming Season
With the upcoming season almost underway, his focus remains clear
“Nationals. That’s the standard we’re holding ourselves to”.
That resilience has carried him through setbacks and helped him mature quickly at the university level. Furthermore, he recognizes what he needs to work on to take his game to the next level.
“I really locked in on getting multiple reps in every day, focusing on my footwork and balance. I just want to be a more reliable threat from deep.”.
As for the competition, Bishop’s isn’t hiding from anyone – he’s confident in the guys [Bishop] has this year.
“We’ve got a strong group this year—depth, versatility, and guys who buy in. If we defend, share the ball, and execute, we’ll give anyone problems. “

Suited for a Great Season
Armed with a strong returning core, Bishop’s is aiming for another trip to the U SPORTS Final 8 in Calgary next March. If they want to repeat as RSEQ champs, expect Yanis Malanda to be front and center. Gaiters fans, buckle up, year two Yanis is about to get started.
