Spotlight Interview: Chris Sagl (Lakehead)

So far into the season, the Lakehead Thunderwolves have been one of the most dangerous teams in the OUA. We had the opportunity to interview one of the biggest contributors to this success, as well as one of the best point guards in the OUA, Chris Sagl.

Out of high school, Sagl’s main reasons for committing to Lakehead were his relationship with coach Ryan Thompson as well as an opportunity to develop and play.

“The opportunity to play right away and compete for a spot. And trusting my five years to one person – Ryan. I trusted him more than the other coaches to look out for me and believe in me.”

He took full advantage of this opportunity, and now, as one of the vets on the team, he attributes his increase in averages over his career to his unrelenting work ethic.

“It shows I put in the work and stay ready for opportunities. I feel I could be having a bigger year efficiency-wise, but I know the work will show and help us push deep into the playoffs.”

After losing their leading scorer last year in Nate Bilamu, Sagl believes that many players on the Thunderwolves, including himself, have stepped up their game to help contribute to their success this season.

“Nate was a massive loss. His work ethic set the tone. But guys stepped up – Harold especially, who’s one of the most talented players in the country. Carson stepped up defensively and as a glue guy. Adrian gives us shooting, and the younger guys like Jorge and Keshaun are coming along.”

This team-oriented mindset is reflected not only in his playstyle but also in what he sees as a successful season for himself and his team this year.

“Improving every day, helping the younger guys adjust, and aiming to win the OUA. Nationals come after – we’ll worry about that when we get there.”

Chris also discussed some of his personal goals for the season.

“I want to be an OUA All-Star. I think I’ve been snubbed the last two years because my impact isn’t always understood. After OUA, I might play professionally, or I might go the coaching route with a grad assistant position at a Division 1 school.”

Chris has been instrumental to Lakehead’s incremental success over the years. We look forward to covering him more throughout the year.
